Watch out for XmlPullParser.nextText()
[This post is by Jesse Wilson from the Dalvik team. —Tim Bray]
Using XmlPullParser is an efficient and maintainable way to parse XML on Android. Historically Android has had two implementations of this interface:
- KXmlParser, via XmlPullParserFactory.newPullParser().
- ExpatPullParser, via Xml.newPullParser().
Xml.newPullParser()
had a bug where calls to nextText()
didn’t always advance to the END_TAG
as the documentation promised it would. As a consequence, some apps may be working around the bug with extra calls to next()
or nextTag()

Cisco: IT Security Policies are Too Soft for Gen Y
Young employees determined to log onto Facebook or bounce around the Web are going to do so, in part because they're motivated to get online and frequently ignore IT policies, and also because the policies in place simply aren't tough enough, according to a global study from Cisco. Seven out of 10 young employees outright ignore IT policies on a frequent basis, and one in four is a victim of identity theft before the age
Open Source Datamining for Social Media Accounts with ThinkUp
Proprietary social networking platforms have a few distinct issues for free software users, but one of the biggest is that it is often hard — if not impossible — to extract your information from them. With Twitter, for example, you can scroll down to the bottom of the page and wait for more tweets to load via JavaScript, but you can't sort and analyze them yourself. But that's exactly what the open source application ThinkUp does

A Closer Look at 10 Billion Downloads
On Tuesday, we announced that Android Market passed 10 Billion app downloads. We wanted to look a little deeper at that huge number. First question: which app was lucky number 10 billion? Photobucket Mobile. They’ll be getting a great prize package, including tickets to next year’s Google I/O developer conference.
Remember we still have 8 days left to celebrate 10 billion downloads with 10-cent apps on Android

New Layout Widgets: Space and GridLayout
Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) sports two new widgets that have been designed to support the richer user interfaces made possible by larger displays: Space and GridLayout.
The most commonly used class for layout in Android is LinearLayout, which allows its children to be aligned in the usual ways: along either the horizontal or vertical axes. It’s often possible to take a complicated layout and break it down into a set of nested linear layouts and, provided this nesting doesn’t get too deep, this is still a good choice for many simple layouts.
A number of posts and articles (e.g. Android Layout Tricks #1, Flattening The Stack) have highlighted drawbacks of nested layouts; which fall into three basic categories:
- Inability to control alignment along both axes simultaneously
- Performance problems in hierarchies that are too deep
- Unsuitability for design tools that support free-form editing
As the font and the text of the “Email address” label change, we want the label to remain aligned with the

Galaxy Ace Heading For The Catwalk
The Galaxy Ace that we told you about back in January, just got a new face-lift. Literally! That’s right, Hugo Boss has decided to give it their once over, and it now is branded with their name. None of the specs have changed, so it is still a low to middle range phone. (Compared to the phones out now.)
I’m not sure as to why companies continue to put their names on devices that are on the lower end of the spectrum. I would think a company like Hugo Boss would want their name attached to a Samsung Galaxy SII or even a Galaxy Nexus style phone, you know, something more high-end to represent their high-end company. Am I

Android 4.0 Graphics and Animations
[This post is by Romain Guy and Chet Haase, Android engineers who have been known to collaborate on the subject of graphics, UIs, and animation. You can read more from them on their blogs at curious-creature.org and graphics-geek.blogspot.com. — Tim Bray]
Earlier this year, Android 3.0 launched with a new 2D rendering pipeline designed to support hardware acceleration on tablets. With this new pipeline, all drawing operations performed by the UI toolkit are carried out using the GPU.
You’ll be happy to hear that Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich, brings an improved version of the hardware-accelerated 2D rendering pipeline to phones, starting with Galaxy Nexus.
Enabling hardware acceleration
In Android 4.0 (API level 14), hardware acceleration, for the first time, is on by default for all applications. For applications at lower API levels, you can turn it on by addingT-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4G Gingerbread Update Has Arrived

Google+ Gets Its First Official APIs
One of the missing pieces of Google+ for many users has been third-party tools, and those can't happen without official APIs. Today, Google has finally taken the first steps toward full developer API access. The public data API allows access to all the publicly available data on Google’s social network. It’s a welcome move from a developer’s point of view, but there are many features not included in this release.
The availability of APIs is key to promoting the adoption of a service, and Google has been taking heat for waiting so long to get the ball rolling. This API release won’t allow full read/write to Google+, but developers will be able to familiarize themselves with the tools and access any public profiles, posts, and images. More full-featured APIs will come later.
Horizontal View Swiping with ViewPager
[This post is by Rich “geekyouup” Hyndman, inspired by the fact that life just got that little bit easier — Tim Bray]
Whether you have just started out in Android app development or are a veteran of the craft, it probably won’t be too long before you’ll need to implement horizontally scrolling sets of views. Many existing Android apps already use this UI pattern, such as the new Android Market, Google Docs and Google+. ViewPager standardizes the implementation.
ViewPager was released as part of the Compatibility Package revision 3 and works with Android 1.6 upwards. After following the instructions to obtain the package you can right-click on your Android project in Eclipse, choose ‘Android Tools’ and ‘Add Compatibility Library’, making the new classes available.

Thinking Like a Web Designer
[This post is by Roman Nurik, who is passionate about icons, with input from me and a bunch of the Framework engineers. —Tim Bray]
The number of people working on mobile apps, and specifically Android, is growing fast. Since modern mobile software-development is a relatively new profession, the community is growing by sucking in experts from related domains, one being web design and development.
It turns out that familiarity with web UI development, particularly using modern HTML5 techniques, can be a great primer for Android UI development. The Android framework and SDK have many analogues to tools and techniques in the Web repertoire of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
In this blog post, we’ll walk through a few web development features and look for matches in the world of Android UI development.

BUILD Conference: What We Know Now About Windows 8
We share our updated impressions of Windows 8 from Microsoft's BUILD Conference
Day one of Microsoft’s BUILD Developer conference is over. Conference attendees have received their Samsung Developer Tablets, and information overload has set in. Though this event is specifically targeted at developers, there is a wealth of information for the consumer to digest. Let’s look at some of the key features we learned about today, as well as some that we’ve received more detail into.
Blue Screen of Death Lives On in Windows 8
Good news for the haters, when Microsoft said it reimagined Windows, it also reimagined what the Blue Screen of Death (BSoD) should look like, which means Windows 8 isn't immune to crashing. If you think about it, it's kind of comforting in a way. After all, what would Windows be without a BSoD revealing what went wrong? You could answer "Linux," or even "Mac OS X" if you're trying to start a flame war, but we won't go there.

Dell & Microsoft Gang Up Against Apple’s “Post PC World”
Apple CEO Steve Jobs went on the record several years ago describing the modern day desktop as “a truck”, suitable for some, but not practical for the mass market. He went on to define the iPad as the first “post PC device”, and has trumpeted his tablet and iOS platforms as flagship products for this ideology ever since. Microsoft and its partners have listened to mainstream media run with his comments as gospel ever since, but some have finally had enough.

Firefox 7 (And Its Improved Memory Usage) Hits Beta Channel
"Leaner and meaner" are two terms you may use to describe a malnourished lion suffering through a drought, but the same phrase also applies to a cornered Firefox. Google's Chrome took a bit of the luster away from Mozilla's star browser. Rather than simply shrug their shoulders, Firefox's developers rolled up their sleeves and got hard at work on the MemShrink program, an initiative to reduce the browser's horrible memory leaks. Members of the team have reported great successes; now, with the release of Firefox 7 Beta, you can check out the memory improvements for yourself.
German State Declares Facebook Like Button Illegal
Facebook’s pervasive web presence can be a little creepy at times, but one German state is apparently fed up with Zuckerberg’s shenanigans. Thilo Weichert, head of the Independent Centre for Privacy Protection of the German state of Schleswig-Holstein, says that the ‘Like’ button is illegal and sites based in the state must remove it or be fined up to 50,000 Euros.

Don't Call It A Comeback: 7 Products That Saved Their Companies (And 2 That Didn't)
They say fate's a fickle mistress, but destiny's got nothing on the free market. For every Microsoft-esque success story, there's the burnt out husk of Sun Microsystems (R.I.P.). The really interesting tales have nothing to do with overwhelming successes or overwhelming failures, though; any budding novelist can tell you that a good story needs some tension.
Fantastic Super Mario Sisters
No doubt, Super Mario and Luigi are male plumbers, but in the works of Beth T, they have turned into girls. If you’re curious, let’s go on checking the fantastic ‘Super Mario Sisters’ illustrations.
Beth T, a female artist living in Canada created these cute cartoon characters themed by Super Mario Bros, but apparently this would be a brand new series named Super Mario Sisters. As we can see from the illustrations, the stars are two kind female plumbers. The purpose of the two girls is to save the handsome Princess Peach and Princess Daisy from evil shrews Wario and Waluigi. Could you achieve the female artist’s dream, Nintendo? After the break, check out the rest illustrations of Super Mario Sisters.
Additionally, if you need other Mario themed toys and gadgets, you might like to check the remote control Mario Kart, Mario Nintendo 3DS holder and more via “Super Mario” tag.
